[Knowledge Base - Prospective Player FAQ](https://www.thegreatgrey.net/app.php/kb/viewarticle?a=9&sid=c204b48a2c2e4486b29fa82efd059786)

Why can't I see in-character threads?

As we have tried to emphasize all over, we are a 21+, 3-3-3 site. Some of our threads feature explicit sexual content. We all felt more comfortable having people register and certify their age to see that content. You're very welcome to register a player account to view this content!

What if my writing isn't good enough?

In a word, the writing quality on this site is "advanced," but what does that really mean?
  • Do you understand the English language well enough to construct a proper sentence and paragraph, and to use proper punctuation?
  • Do you know how to plot as you go along, and give your partner writer something to respond to when you post?
That's it, full stop.

We believe that creative writing is an aspirational hobby, and we all have to start somewhere. Everyone who ever wrote in a text-based RP learned from other writers, including us. Yes, it can be intimidating, but the best way to become a better writer is to write with people better at it than you are! We have good writers here, but more importantly, they're kind people, too.

What if English isn't my first language?

See the above question! We welcome players from anywhere in the world as long as you have competency in English in line with the above guidelines. If you can manage that, you're golden!

Do you welcome non-heteronormative characters and players?

100%! Your staff do everything in their power to ensure TGG is a safe and welcoming community for LGBTQIA+ players and characters. If you do not care to play in proximity with people and characters who are non-straight and/or non-cisgendered, this is not the game for you.

What if my application isn't good enough?

We almost never simply reject applications. If you meet the above criteria, you should be fine. If something on your app needs to be changed, we will let you know precisely what the issues are and give you ample time to correct or add content.

What if I don't know much about the 19th Century/Victorian London/etc.?

We assume if you're here, you want to learn! We have lots of information and references available for you as a jumping off point, and if you're ever unsure about historical accuracy, please just ask! Your questions are always welcome, and could be helpful to others, too.

What if I've never done play-by-post/forum RP/text RP/etc?

Welcome and hooray for trying new things!

First of all, any help you need with the format or protocols involved in taking part in the game, everyone is here to help. The Discord server is the quickest way to ask for and get help.

Second, we've tried to set up the application process to be as straight-forward as possible. We've got a step-by-step checklist to lead your through the process. If you still find yourself confused, again, please reach out! We are here to help.

Do I need to join the Discord server?

Yes, we do use our Discord server for a number of administrative tasks, not least of which is application submission. We promise you don't have to chat if you really don't want to!

THAT SAID, we do very strongly encourage all of our players to join in when they feel comfortable doing so. Everyone is very friendly, and you will be welcomed warmly and treated with respect at all times. Even if you choose to not chat much, the Discord is an invaluable resource for plotting and making connections.

Will the players welcome me?

Unequivocally, yes! We're all adults and so we feel pretty secure in saying everyone has different preferences and connect better with certain people, and that's no different here. But your staff are very serious about morale-building, player safety, and player comfort, and we feel this tack makes this a place where newbies are welcomed with excited, open arms. Our players will be thrilled to have you, and know everything about you and what characters you want to bring into our community!

Will the staff be nice to me?

Unless you are rude, absolutely yes! (Even if you're rude, we'll still be polite in showing you the door.) Staff are players too, and really happy you are here. We're here to help you in whatever way you need, and if you make a mistake, you don't have to worry about us getting angry with you.

Will the site provide regular plot options?

Yes! This happens to be an area of your founders' particular expertise! We have actual decades of experience providing plot devices and events to players on a monthly basis, and we plan to continue that here at TGG. Our goal is to have a variety of events and/or plot options consistently available for anyone who cares to take part, and to make it easy for players to do so.

Also worth mentioning that we always, always want your big plot ideas! Standard disclaimer that we might not use what you suggest, or may change aspects — You know how it goes when you're trying to fit something into a specific scenario. But your brainstorming is invaluable help, even if the idea is still vague.
